The Jesus Lizard kicked off their 2009 reunion tour in Nashville, TN at the legendary Exit/In. My friend (and We Fun collaborator) Matthew Robison decided to round up some cameras and capture the show for a concert film. I was brought in to be the director of photography, and John Baldwin was called to oversee the audio and produce. (Chunklet founder Henry Owings is also a producer and designed the cover.)

The band pounded through a relentless 90 minute set to a soaking wet sold out crowd. We were excited about our successful shoot and the possibility of what could be done with the film. However, The Jesus Lizard…not so much.

After the tour was finished, the band went back to their pre-reunion life. When Matthew approached them with the edited film (done with skill by Brian Wilson), the reception was luke warm at best. It was more about them moving on than it was a comment on our work.

After another year passed, Matthew approached them again, this time with our We Fun distributor MVD on board. Much to our delight and the delight of fans everywhere, the band wanted to go forward with the release. Trust me, it’s worth the wait. Play it LOUD.

We spent the day with him filming on his farm in Wartrace, TN. Charlie told jokes, road stories, and family secrets. One of the great things about growing up in Nashville is the exposure I’ve been granted to musical legends.

Longtime creative partner, Greg Giblin shot the street and bus footage in Memphis, TN.

I first met the boys from Bend, Oregon on Labor Day weekend 2009. They were in Tennessee to have me help produce and record ten songs. My longtime friend Chris Ramming brought us together. He met them in Richmond, VA when he booked the band at his club/restaurant Cous Cous. Chris housed them for a few days and ended up jumping in their van as an unofficial tour manager for a stretch dates on the east coast.

The instant I heard Larry And His Flask play, I became a fanatic. Their energy is boundless. Their writing and playing is inspired. This band literally lives on the road. Whether opening for Dropkick Murphys at the House of Blues or playing a street corner in NYC, they bring a balls-out live show that leaves your jaw on the floor.

This piece was filmed in my living room in Nashville in December 2010. It was mainly created for a Christmas variety show Ramming puts on every year at Cous Cous. Instead of a carol, they chose a Marvin Gaye classic to express a message of peace. If they come to your town, do yourself a favor and go to the show.

I had the honor of directing and editing a short film for William Tyler’s new album, Behold The Spirit. David Malitz from The Washington Post describes the disc as “a gorgeous, meditative album of ambient acoustic music that combines the classic fingerpicking tradition of John Fahey with the more experimental sounds of Sun City Girls.”

The film was shot over two days in and around Nashville, January 2011. William felt that the album had a “winter feel” to it, so when the snow fell we got to work. I give him much respect for braving the hours of bone-chilling cold without complaint. The fireside guitar performance was filmed live in his backyard.
